These days, you’d be more surprised to see a lack of book-movie adaptations hitting theaters than to hear that one of your favorite novels or book series is about to hit the big screen. The industry has been so saturated with these adaptations that it really takes something special to become a major success.
Of course, over the years and decades, we’ve seen some really terrific book-to-movie adaptations not only shattering the box office and all expectations, but becoming modern classics that millions of people can watch over and over again, without ever getting bored.
Such cases include the Harry potter series, as well as the superb the Lord of the Rings franchise and jurassic park, among others.
To dig a little deeper, Betway Casino looked at the most successful book-to-film adaptations from different angles.
The first, of course, was to see which of the countless adaptations we’ve seen grossed the most dollars on a global platform. Some of these amounts are frankly staggering.
More than half of the roster is made up of a movie that grossed over $ 1 billion on the world stage, while the last four were close to joining the billion dollar club.
What’s interesting though, is how much the list changes when you compare what made the money to what is top rated, according to imdb. The Lord of the Rings continues to do well, but you see inclusions in this list such as Forrest Gump and Shutter island, which were not in the previous one.
What is obviously clear is that while the movies are arguably more mainstream than the books they are based on, this is a beloved book series that can guarantee that a movie becomes a financial success when it premieres.
This is corroborated by the ratings given to the original books in relation to the critical responses to their adaptations on the big screen. Take a look at the graphic below, which shows how the original Harry potter books compared to their movie counterparts.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, which saw the series come to an end, received top ratings from both readers and audiences alike, with a third film Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban great too.
We don’t know where the next big hit came from, but if you want to get a good idea, get yourself a book!
