“There is no time more important than now to revisit the life of Dick Gregory,” said Malhotra. “His fearless voice rose to the challenges of his time, calling on Americans to question their beliefs, at a time when you risked your livelihood – maybe even your life – to speak out. comedic of his generation, comedy turned out to be just the start of one of the most unique and impactful journeys of any person we have seen. Andre and his team did an amazing job of showing just how Gregory was walking and talking THE SPEECH in a way we’ve rarely seen anyone else do. “

Gregory inspired a generation with his activism in the field, his tireless desire to help, and his influential comedy. Featuring archival footage from his early days as a comedian, the film is written with Gregory’s own voice just before his death in 2017, reflecting the impact of his life on the world as a self-proclaimed “agitator.” Dave Chappelle, Chris Rock, Kevin Hart, Wanda Sykes, W. Kamau Bell and others discuss the importance of Gregory’s paradigm shift on the art of comedy and culture. The film features the original music of Black Thought by Grammy®-winning hip-hop group The Roots.

“Dick Gregory is as present to me now as he was when I started filming him six years ago – an insignificant amount of time compared to the nearly six decades this man has so influenced history, American comedy, activism and nutrition, “said Gaines. “He emptied himself completely for the move, and although the enormity of his sacrifices is seldom acknowledged, he gave every artist a master class on what it really means to entertain and educate. Getting to know Dick Gregory was a transformative experience that not only influenced the making of this film, but me as a man. Vinnie and the team at SHOWTIME have been incredible partners in helping to bring this topical story to the world, and I can’t wait for Dick Gregory to finally get his due. “

Gaines founded and runs Cinemation Studios, based in Los Angeles. His production credits include the four-part documentary series The Lady and the Dale, the remake of Children of the Corn by Stephen King, Da Sweet Blood of Jesus by Spike Lee, and the award-winning film Bill Nye: Science Guy.

THE ONE AND ONLY DICK GREGORY is a Cinemation Studios production, written and directed by Gaines, and produced by Gaines and Valerie Edwards. The film is produced by Kevin Hart and Bryan Smiley for Hartbeat Productions, Lena Waithe and Rishi Rajani for Hillman Grad Productions, and Christian Gregory, Chad Troutwine and Matt Rachamkin.
