real screen is partnering with filmmaker and executive producer Chuck Braverman and his video series Westdoc Online, to bring his interviews with acclaimed documentary makers and personalities in the non-fictional content industry to his readership.

The latest installment features legendary documentary executive producer, network director and, in the words of the New York Times, “The great lady of documentary film”, Sheila Nevins. Now at the helm of MTV Documentary Films, Nevins has spent most of his career building television and managing HBO’s esteemed documentary department, overseeing the production of around 1,200 docs in the span of a little less than 40 years old.

She first joined the premium cable company in 1979 and named president of HBO Documentary Films in 2004, her tenure saw HBO’s docs garner 85 Oscar nominations and 26 wins, as well as Emmy and Peabody Award scores. With MTV Documentary Films since last spring, its award race appears to be on track, with one of its first acquisitions for the millennium-focused network, the documentary short Saint Louis Superman, shortlisted for an Academy Award.

In the episode, Nevins chats with Chuck Braverman about his HBO career, his plans to find and produce documentaries relevant to MTV audiences, and more.
